Proposals for grants and contracts

Donors want to fund programs that are technically strong and innovative and feature a stellar team with exceptional skills and experience and a solid management system. But before any of that is apparent, they have to read your proposal. Your first objective must be to prepare a document that is clear and concise, compelling, and exactly what they asked for.

Winning means making your proposal stand out—and while technical expertise is essential, you will grab and hold their attention with well-written text that responds exactly to the evaluation criteria. From capture to submission, consider me a member of your proposal team.

Writing and editing

I always say that the easy part of writing is the writing. The hard work comes before the first word is on the page. Thinking about what you want to write, to whom, and why, are the first tasks. I love outlines and frameworks that organize our thinking and make sure the team is in agreement. When this is done well, the first draft is pretty close to the final draft. I can work with your team as a lead writer, co-writer, or as the editor.

I've successfully integrated AI into my writing and editing, but with limitations. AI can speed up tasks such as research and proofreading, and it makes me more efficient. But it's no replacement for the thinking and research that a compelling document requires. I like to find a balance that works for each of my clients.

Budgets are getting smaller, and competition for funding is getting fierce. It's not enough to just submit a proposal; you need to position your organization in a public forum. Social media, a website, publications, and events are all important tools for creating, strengthening, and connecting your brand. Build your brand so that when the evaluation committee reads your proposal, they recognize your name and feel a connection.

I can work with organizations and donor-funded projects to help teams communicate their successes and tell stories that resonate.

Strategic communications
Writing coach

Ssssh. Nobody has to know. This can be our secret. My job is to help you be a better writer (in English) and a better editor of your own text. I help you through the thinking process to communicate what you know, connect with your audience, and achieve your purpose. We can work together to improve your English writing skills, no matter your starting point. And if you want to use AI as a writing tool, we can work out the process and prompts that will make your writing efficient and uniquely yours.

Or maybe it's not a secret, and I work with your team to help them improve their writing skills for proposals, reports, or storytelling. This is one of my favorite roles—working with groups of smart, dynamic people to help them find and articulate the stories that move them.
